Handmade in Egypt Isis The cult of Isis spread far beyond Ancient Egypt, being adopted by the Hellenistic and Roman worlds in post-Pharaonic times. The goddess was the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus, becoming identified, like Hathor, as the divine mother of the reigning pharaoh. As the devoted wife of Osiris, she mummified and reanimated his dismembered body after he had been murdered by Seth, and magically conceived their son Horus in the process. She was also known as 'Isis great in magic', and, as such, had healing powers and the ability to protect the young. In Ancient Egyptian myth, she cured son god, Ra, from a snake bite, in return for knowledge of his secret name. She passed this onto Horus, giving him great powers. Her most famous cult site was the island of Philae near Aswan, where a magnificent temple complex was constructed in her honour.
